RE: SMERSH
Feb 15 2008, 12:50 AM EST So? SMERSH was a real organization that Fleming incorporated into his books based on his time in Navel Intelligence. As a formative part of the Bond stories is'nt this important? Would'nt this have a relavance to who and what Bond/MI6 is against? And SPECTRE is prob'ly based on SMERSH. Is it only about the movies or what the books brought to the movies? 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: SMERSH
Mar 1 2008, 2:28 AM EST "does anyone know why they changed it from smersh to spectre?"SMERSH was a real part of the Soviet NKVD( which later became the KGB). Fleming had knowlege of them from his time in Naval Intelligence and incorporated it in the early books. Theres a great page on SMERSH at Wikipedia. I think because of Cold War tensions during the early '60s EON left out SMERSH and made it all about SPECTRE. SMERSH did'nt make it back to the movies until the '80s with TLD and Dalton..............................................................................C. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: SMERSH
Mar 3 2008, 11:18 PM EST The whole "Cold War" aspect of the Bond novels (and the prominence of SMERSH in them) was eliminated by Danjaq, in an effort to not anger the Soviet Union--in case they would prove to be a lucrative film market for the Bond's...as they are now. Hence, in the film series Bond never really goes up against the Russians--even in the movie "From Russia With Love," the Soviets are just as much victimized by SPECTRE as the British are--and if there is any Russian involvement in the plot (I'm thinking "Octopussy" here) it is due to...extremists. And if I understand correctly, Fleming made more of SMERSH than they actually were. SPECTRE is not based on SMERSH. SPECTRE is an international gang of criminals and terrorists, showing no allegiance to any Nation or political philosophy...or religion, for that matter. Do you find this valuable? |
