Ranking the actors is tough since each brought their own distinct elements to the character. They were also dependent on the stories, the supporting staff, and the production to make or break their performances. Still, this is how we see things:Connery: As the first Bond, he set the bar. He's different than the Bond of the books but the movies and Sean's charisma were iconic. Since Fleming's stories were contemporary to Sean's era, the themes fit best overall with Connery's films. Moore: Bad timing (too old) and the bad era (clothes, music, technology, you name it) saddled Roger with most of the worst movies in the series. He's also more of a dandy than we envision James Bond. Lazenby: if you've read the books, Lazenby ,most closely resembles the image of Bond. We think he doesn't get a fair shake and OHMSS is one of our favorites (Diana Rigg also adds a huge plus to this film). Dalton: The franchise seems to have lost its way at this point. The Cold War was thawing and the suave sophistication of the books seemed dated during the 1980's. Ultimately, stories aside, Timothy just wasn't Bond enough for us. Peirce Brosnan: he's the prettiest of Bonds (see: http://comicsagogo.files.wordpress.com/2011/12/james-bond-connery-lazenby-moore-dalton-brosnan-craig-humor.png). Goldeneye was fantastic. The others were OK. Brosnan was a wonderful physical presence and resurrected the suave and cheeky Bond - better than Moore. Craig: It was inevitable. If the franchise was to survive, it had to adapt. The Bourne series showed that audiences were looking for more grit and muscle in its films of international intrigue. Daniel is sure to be as controversial a Bond as Lazenby. Goodbye civility. Hello brute force. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

1) Connery: The ULTIMATE ALPHA BOND. Had it all suave, rugged, the ladykiller of the pack, brutal & could take a beating, very physical and delivered oneliners like no one else, but the biggest factor his charisma. Made Bond an Icon. No disrepect to the other actors NO Connery NO Bond. Its as simple as that.2) Brosnan: For me a very close race between him and Daniel Craig. With Brosnan's Bond he is the alrounder of the group, he is what Roger Moore failed to be. Maybe a bit to clean cut & pretty even with the beard, 3 Daniel Craig: I like his portrayal of Bond. Not a lot to choose between Craig & Brosnan. Craig plays a tormented Bond with a grudge & has a physical presence that most of the other Bond actors can't match, but needs more refinement. 4) Lazenby: Acting wise he needed to be developed but a big physical presence which helped him to carry off Bond. For me he had the hardest act to follow, taking over from THE ICON which is Connery but here is the point which gets over looked it seems. That opening scene where he saves Tracey from herself & the thugs then she runs off with Lazenby turning to the camara cue oneliner "this never happened to the other fellow". Best & probably the most important one liner ever to be delivered because whatever happened in the future with Bond, things were in safe hands 23 Bond films later. 5) Moore: Oh Oh Roger, don't get me wrong Moore had a lot going for him. He had charm & charisma in abundance, but very little physicality. He made Bond films with too much humour. I think he found it too easy 6) Dalton: Was the wrong person to play Bond. Way too serious Tim & had the wrong look with very little screen presence. Although Licence 2 Kill is a good film. They should of got Adrian Paul to play Bond very much in the Connery mould. In fact a dead ringer for Connery 1 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Craig is the best James Bond if you want to be true to the James Bond mythos. The problem is, as a cultural icon, we are all familiar with the characterization of Sean Connery. Brosnan was a cartoony Bond - a light hearted version of Connery. .

Well I will throw in my two cents as well1. Connery -- Yes I know everyone says "the prototype, set the bar" etc. but there is more to it: His first 5 movies were arguably some of the best. The fact that he was so successful in these 5 consecutive films, shows that he could do it right. Every actor since him has admitted that they looked to his style when figuring out how to play the role. His influence has been greatly felt after his departure from the role. 2. Dalton -- My favorite Bond. A new type of good looking, he is the best actor of the bunch. Dalton nailed it theatrically and cinematically during a period that simply had finer acting. Dalton drew heavily from the source material (Fleming's novels) which sets him apart from the rest. I hold that TLD and LTK are two of the better Bond films; his acting was masterful in both. 3. Moore -- He's headlined some of the best and worst 007 films. The Spy Who Loved Me was the first Bond film I ever saw and remains in my top 5. However AVTAK and TMWTGG are consistently in the 20s, regardless of my list. TSWLM and FYEO remain seminal Bond films. Even his worse films had good scenes and set pieces that have been directly copied. 4. Craig -- Currently he has 2 performances: one stellar (CR) and one lackluster (QOS), his place could change based on his later films. He has the harder side but without the suave class, which loses some points. 5. Brosnan -- Not a fan. GE was a strong performance, as was TWINE but while he looked the role and brought elegance, he never did anything very memorable. In fact, I remember GE mostly for Alec Trevelyan, one of my favorite villains...and Famke Janssen ;) 6. Lazenby -- No offense to the fella. OHMSS is in my top 5, but I feel with another actor it would be my #1. He was a model and not ready for this role...he earned his pay with his final scene which was hopeful for his next film....which never happened. 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

Sean Connery is James Bond!Roger Moore played Bond on 'That was the week that was' just like Connery, maybe even better, but clowned it up for the movies. Moore actually was in Army Intelligence, for a while. 1/ Connery 2/Moore 3/Lazenby could have been really good if he stuck with it. 4/Dalton 5/Brosnan 6/ Yuk that gingery Blond 1 out of 1 found this valuable. 1. Connery: You don't know a thing if Connery doesn't top your list2. Brosnan: Looked the part acted the part. Perfect mix between Connery and Moore. He is the modern Bond 3. Moore: His early films when he looked the part, just not tough enough 4. Dalton: Too grumpy but if he smiled more he looks the part 5. Lazenby: Tough and a bit better actor than I would expect but... something rubs me the wrong way about him. 7. ... Daniel Craig is not Bond, never will be Bond! And NO Craig is nothing what Fleming invisioned. 1 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

There are only two men on this list that can kick someone's ass1. Connery 2. Craig I'm not afraid of Moore (especially), Brosnan, George, Dalton (he would be the closest fight) or any other actor portraying Bond. Sean Connery is the original. The fight scene in the train of From Russia With Love was the first big time action fight that I ever saw and it let me know that Connery was a bad ass. Then Daniel Craig comes in with Casino Royale. He brought an edge back to the character that had been lacking during the Brosnan era. After Goldeneye his movies became comic books. If Bond can't kick my ass, he doesn't belong on the list. I'm tired of this "Craig is what Fleming envisioned". I'm sure some of you must have actually read a book or two. Craig doesn't play Bond the way Fleming envisioned at all. He's a completely charmless, lifeless monster with no chemistry on screen with anybody. Lazenby is right, he has no heart at all. Plus he looks like prehistoric man, like he should be dragging his knuckles behind him. I'm surprised he can even speak more than grunts.Physically, Timothy Dalton looks closer to Fleming's sketch of Bond, but I'll take Sean Connery above all others because he possesses all the proper attributes to bring Bond to the screen, being both physically imposing, but also with a sense of personality. I'd give Brosnan and, Dalton the second place, though Brosnan is perhaps a little too pretty and smarmy. Remember, though, a lot of what comes out is in the writing, not necessarily just the actor. Craig's Bond is more like Fleming's? Gee, maybe because the writing is more like Fleming's. Do you find this valuable? |
