Bernard Lee played it as Fleming invented it. If Fleming had made M a woman, I would be a bit more forgiving. Judi Dench- great actor but Fleming made M a man. End of story

"Well, she escaped when Bond shot the lock on her prison door with his P99. I think you're referring to how she jumpered the 9 volt battery on the tracker chip that came out of the warhead. Thanks for correcting me MK. Yes Judi is truely one of those leader who "can do it by herself, thank you." Who I don't think people give a lot of credit to is good ole' Robert Brown. Now Im not saying he was the best (Judi is) but he did keep the face of MI6 alive and well. You cant tell me he was horrible. He was OK, not the best, but a respectable 3rd. >>>>GSTQ<<<< Do you find this valuable? |

" He was OK, not the best, but a respectable 3rd.Then again, there were only three M's. But yes, I love your point (expect a compliment). Robert Brown does deserve credit for all that you said. But also for going through Dalton. Not because of Dalton as a actor (he was one of the few greats) but because of Daltons portrayle of Bond. Dalton protrayed a hard ass, fight kicking machine, whose arrigence almost led to a war amungst MI6 and the United Drug Dealers Around The World. Sean.7 Do you find this valuable? |

Nothing against Judi, but I don't wanna see her past Bernard's record of 11 times as M. As of now shes been M for 6 movies mabye going on 7 for Bond-23. Honor Bernard by noting to 11 films.Do you find this valuable? |

"But Judy Dench got right to the point and was a strict Bond. On The World is Not Enough when judy escaped, let see Bernard Lee do that!"I completely agree, Bernard Lee was a brilliant M but Judi Dench just brings it to another level, she gets more involved in the action like in TWINE, whereas Bernard Lee was a good M but got sidelined, its not his fault its the writers but Judi's the best Do you find this valuable? |

Judy Dench. I wasn't a big fan of her in the B rosnan years, however with CR she showed her true colours.

"i dissagree i think judy dench is a great <M>"Ditto- she's the best since Lee. Even mentioning the others is pointless- they contributed zip to the films. I always saw Lois as Moneypenny and some substitute who definitely never came off as an "M". That didn't happen until Dench- may she be in the next 20 Bonds! She's good in all she's done (Especially "As Time Goes by"- I was very pleased to see her co-star from that appear with her in TND). Her edge in CR with the newly christened 007 was masterful, and it's very cool to see her M warming to him- sort of the start of a partnership of sorts. Can't wait for QOS!! Sorry to disagree old man but Micheal Caine would be an excellent M...a very versatile and accomplished actor,no stranger to spy/thriller films..and about the right age(now) for a former Vice Admiral in charge of Mi6...if he played it serious, I'd love to see it happen! Do you find this valuable? |

Hey, you're more well-read on the original novels than I am, and what a boring world it would be if we all agreed. To me, Bernard Lee will always be the yardstick because you always got the feeling if there was a short list of situations in which Bond lost some of his confidence, being grilled by M would be on that list. Now, when I say Michael Caine is a wonderful actor, I have a list of films in mind he has done; none of them involve a role that exude this kind of gruff paternal edge. Not like...that first scene in Dr. No where he takes "that damn Beretta" away. I would further add this is what makes Judi Dench so great. It's like this: Bond can stare down a gunbarrel, he can stare down a champion poker player...he'd much rather be someplace else when he's looking at M from across a desk. That isn't Michael Caine's signature role. He plays people that you, the audience, are to some extent pretending to be. And that would ruin the character of M. M does not wonder what Bond is going to do. Bond wonders what M is going to do. Do you find this valuable? |

I totally agree that Bernard Lee set the standard and will never be topped. His interplay with Connery is VERY like the books. Also that Judi Dench is doing a fine job as M,bringing a more serious take back to the part. I just think that as an accomplished actor Caine could fill the part if Dench left and bring that gruff paternal Lee-ishness to the part.Just because hes never done a role like that - does'nt mean he can't. And to para-phrase Fleming,"A boring world is not enough!" Cheers! Do you find this valuable? |
