My Honest Opinion
Jul 8 2007, 8:12 PM EDT Before Casino Royale came out, I heard that the new Bond would be Daniel Craig. I was not interested in this new Bond but I watched Casino Royale anyways. After seeing it, I thought that it was a great film, but I thought that Craig didn't seem like Bond. It could be just me but I don't know. Don't get me wrong, he is a great actor and I hope he does more Bond films, it's just that he didn't seem like the character of Bond. 4 out of 10 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: My Honest Opinion
Jul 9 2007, 1:31 AM EDT I think your reaction is quite normal if your an avid James Bond fan. I remember when Roger Moore first took over for Sean Connery, I was devistated. I grew up with Goldfinger, Thunderball, and Diamonds Are Forever. Connery was all I knew. Roger Moore was nothing like him, he lacked Connery's toughness and bravado. I hated Live and Let Die when it first came out, and I wanted nothing more than to see Roger Moore fail at it. By the time Dalton took over, I was a huge Moore fan, and came to admire the prim and witty side he gave 007. If Brosnan was the Bond you grew up with, then your feelings are completely understandable. In any other case, it may be that he was a little rough around the edges in his first go round. I have found that the second movie always tells the tale. I think it will either define Craig, or finish him as 007. Do you find this valuable? |

RE: My Honest Opinion
Nov 20 2007, 9:10 PM EST I agree...but I think the concept was intended to 're' introduce Bond before he developed into the character we know today and this idea was similar to the Batman Begins idea - with a view to refreshing the franchise and open up more story-line potential. If this notin is correct then no doubt Craig's Bond will develop into that style which we have become well accustomed to. Having said that, like the Star Wars 'prequals' its hard to suspend disbelief when a backwards/nostalgic process is adapted to modern technology - makes no sense, but it was handled so deftly the movie turned out alright anyway. If we can negotiate these abstractions then we have the 're' introduction of Moneypenny, Q & hopefully a male M Do you find this valuable? |

RE: My Honest Opinion
Nov 23 2007, 4:06 PM EST I can understand the original poster. My first Bond film was OHMSS, with Lazenby. I guess that made me a bit more objective if you believe your "first" Bond is your "favorite" Bond. When Brosnan was first hired for "The Living Daylights," I cringed. I thought he'd be terrible. When Dalton replaced him I was encouraged, but I thought he had the same problem as Brosnan--too chiseled-good-looking, too delicate. Well, Dalton surprised me--I thought he was the best version of James Bond since Connery, and played him more closely to the Fleming books version. Then when Brosnan came along I was expecting disaster, and Brosnan surprised me at how good he was in "Goldeneye." All this gave me a "wait-and-see" attitude with Craig, while watching a bunch of supposed "fans" throwing hissy-fits making fools of themselves. But the proof was in the performance. Craig did GREAT. He doesn't LOOK like the "Hoagy Carmichael" Bond, but he sure acts like Fleming's Bond, brutal, cruel sometimes, killing people with his bare hands. I'm hoping that Craig doesn't turn into the "traditonal" movie-Bond. I'm hoping he stays close to what he's doing and shaves off the rougher edges. And "Casino Royale" is a TERRIFIC James Bonf film, one of my top five (and close to the top). I'm very hopeful about the future of the franchise. "A Waste of time?" Have fun watching "Charlie's Angels." I thought it was terribly stupid. Do you find this valuable? |
