The Sean Connery era
Nov 12 2010, 6:52 AM EST
I've once more began a season of watching nothing but the greatest films ever made (do I really need to say what they are?) and it has come to my attention that the Connery films are superb, alas Connery is not. He has all the fine suits and the 'Thunderball' is by far one of my favourite Bond films, the great girls (Domino and Jill Masterson) and the Aston Martin DB5, but he can't quip to save his life! I've always known 007 to have both the bare knuckle qualities and the refined gentleman qualities and, in my opinion, Connery lacks the latter; half of the Bond character is lost. The more I watch the Connery films, the more I'm saying 'he's not Roger Moore'. I would here like to say that I mean no disrespect to Connery nor to his die hard fans and when I want to just 'bung' a film on without caring too much (I just want some easy entertainment) I often resort to 'Diamonds Are Forever'.

Sean wasn't SUPPOSED to be the most refined character; his Bond was a brutish spy from the Fleming novels, especially evident in the films Dr. No and From Russia With Love. He DOES have refined qualities, albeit not as much as Moore or Brosnan, but all in all he's a guy getting on with his job who can put on a cool, calm facade of humour WHEN NECESSARY as opposed to being a wise guy all the time.My only problem with Connery was that he looked bored with the role in YOLT and DAF. But his first 4 007 films - and performances - were superb. If anything, I thought Moore and Brosnan had too many quips (more than Connery), to the point where it became eye-rolling. But that's just my opinion. I've always had a preference for the Fleming style of James Bond and to me Sean in Dr. No and FRWL, plus Dalton and Craig and their movies, encapulate this vision perfectly. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. I agree with 6-stringa007. Connery was never suppose to be a complete refined gentlemen. Connery was playing his version of Flemming's Bond. I like to think of Connery as Daniel Craig and Roger Moore Combined! He defiantly does have class but is a very brutish bond. Now as a Moore fan myself I agree Bond should be classy! Its the EON element that was added to Flemming's brutal Bond image.Moore was moore classy and suave because at the time they wanted Bond to be different than the Connery Bond and I agree with the decision. I also like how each actor has a different character quality, its great for the Bond series. So no I dont think Connery's lack of suave makes him any less better than Moore or anyother Bond. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |
