Best Bond Ever?
Dec 27 2006, 11:33 AM EST
Goldfinger is oft hailed as the best Bond film of all time. From OddJob and Pussy Galore to the laser scene and countless quotes most agree it's a very balanced film from end-to-end. What do you think? Does Daniel Craig's Casino Royale take the mantle? 8  out of 11 found this valuable. Do you?

No! Goldfinger is the best movie in the entire series. However Casino Royale is a fantastic movie with a great new direction. Goldfinger just had everthing working for it - Connery's performance was brilliant / amazing cast / powerful title song / probably the best qoutes / great flow to the movie - it was just spot on. Going forward I do like Craig as bond. He brings a definate intensity to the character and he's a really good actor - might he take the mantle in that department?? 2  out of 3 found this valuable. I agree that Goldfinger is hard to beat! I love Craig's intensity, but want to see how he does in the next film. Does he have staying power? Or, is he just a fresh face? 0  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

Good point! I think if he really wants the role, he's can sell it for at least another 3 movies. Can't wait till 11/08.

Look, its like this...Sean Connery is the original!!! He fleshed out JB and made the character a pop icon. George Lazenby only appeared once--yet OHMSS is a masterpiece! Roger Moore finally gelled by TSWLM (and peaked with FYEO). Timothy Dalton brought a hard, calculating lethal- weapon edge to the role that made his movies as enjoyable as Connery's. In my opinion, they contributed something and made JB my all-time favorite. Daniel Craig sucks, hated Brosnan. 1  out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?

I was with ya up to "Daniel Craig sucks," but though it's a bit premature to say he's better than Connery, I'd say Craig is a serious threat to that title. Let's see how he does in the next four (He's certainly engaged in making his movies better--that's quite unusual in the pre-production phase for him to be a contributor). I also sometimes think Dalton is bwtter as his Bond hues a bit closer to fleming than Connery's interpretation. 0  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

Oh, and as far as "Goldfinger" is concerned, I'd say it's the best. OHMSS with Connery could have been better. "From Russia With Love" and "Dr. No" are right up there. 'The Living Daylights" is solid. "Casino Royale" is the only movie in a long while to achieve those heights. 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

I would have to say 'From Russia With Love" is by far the best of all time. Great cast best story line and Sean Connery has really by this time settled into the bond role (not that he didnt really hit the ground running with Dr. No). Casino Royale and the Craig era are just what the bond scene needs and I have really High hopes for the next film. 1  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

I agree...as long as the Craig films stay as Fleming-ish as the first four Connery films and OHMSS. Stay close to the original 007 as per Fleming!

the plots in the two films are just great, F.R,W,L. using the british secret service to steel the lecter ,and thunderball for the under water seqences, must have been a cinama first. when dr. no was realised it was haild as the first action thriller, F.R.W.L. took that even further

Goldfinger was an excellent film, one of the series classics, but it WAS NOT the best. In my opinion, Thunderball was, it had an amazing plot, great locations and beautiful women. 0  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

I think you have to look at Goldfinger from the perspective of the general public and not the fans. Out of those early films, it gave us the Bond that , if I may use the cliché, every man wants to be and every woman wants to be with. It also built the formula with the gadgets, cars, women, villains, etc. Even if they saw the previous films, I would venture that many people's interest in James Bond really took hold after seeing Goldfinger. From Russia With Love has always been my fave. OHMSS is a great story. I think if Sean had done it it would be close for me. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

For the longest time Goldfinger was hands-down my favorite. It did have everything, and more than any other film, it defined the series.

But From Russia With Love has recently crept up to the top of my list. It's one of the tightest and most focused entries in the series, and one of the least "indulgent" (Gypsy catfight aside). The pacing, the characters, the way the plot carefully unfolds... all masterfully done. The patience of Grant as he shadows Bond throughout the film, the delightfully sinister meetings with Blofeld, Klebb, and Kronsteen (and of, course, the cat), the cruelty of Grant's taunting of Bond during their final confrontation, and of course the brutal, frenzied, claustrophobic struggle that follows.

The gadgetry is contained, the set pieces fantastic (how about that chess tournament set?), and best of all, the complexities and intricacies of the plot aren't dumbed down -- it respects the intelligence of the audience.

Plus, the train. There's something about spies playing cat and mouse on a train (see also North by Northwest) that just works.
