Thoughts on "Dr No" (Ian Fleming read-a-thon continues) *Spoilers*

I thought that "Dr No" is probably the most underrated of all of novels. Dr No comes off as more chilling than Bleofeld. The movie did not do him justice It almost seems like Ian Fleming was describing Dr No as a reptilian. **fair usage is claimed** "It was impossible to tell Doctor No's age...there were no lines on the face. It was odd to see the forehead as smooth as the top of a polished skull. Even the cavernous indrawn cheeks below below the prominent cheekbone looked as smooth as fine ivory. There was something Daliesque about the eyebrows, which were fine and black and sharply upswept as if they had been painted on as make-up for the conjurer. Below them, slanting jet black eyes stared out of the skull. They were without eyelashes......The fine thin nose ended very close above the a wide compressed wound of a mouth which...showed only cruelty and authority," Also, the chemistry between Bond and Miss Rider was great. They seemed to go well together, Much more so than any previous novel "Bond girl", including Vesper Lynd or Tiffany Case. Once I started to read it I could not put it down. My only complaint is way Bond killed Dr No. Fleming almost left the possibility of Dr No coming back. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I just read Dr. No last week for the first time (as part of a six-novel Bond binge while on vacation) and I have to agree with you... Dr. No is far and away one of the best. Usually I find the Fleming novels entertaining and fun, but not particularly riveting. But this one really had me in its grip. I was so impressed that it made me re-evaluate my opinion of the movie as well. Totally agree about not being able to put the book down. As for Dr. No's death, well, the film's version is more dramatic and exciting, but the manner in which Bond deals with Dr. No in the book is pretty awesome (and hilarious). I don't think Dr. No's going to be walking away from being buried alive in dried guano. Such ironic justice. Do you find this valuable? |

I, too loved Dr no. Its a shame they left ouy so much in the movie from the book, but i guess i have the same view for some other novals. But, for instance, bonds obsticle coarse, all that is really there in the film is the electric fence, the hot tunnel (which isnt even close to like in the book), and something which i guess reffers to the vertical shaft, exept downwards? And also in the book, quarrel and bond have a much stronger relationship as they worked together in Live and let die. But, EON had to film the books out of order so we dont have that strong bond. Not that i dont love the movie the movie the movie is AMAZING but so is the book, maybe a little more amazing Do you find this valuable? |

While I prefer the movie to the book Dr. No, mostly because the books adds so many great elements, the book is still terrific. The one scene from the book that is far superior to the movie is when they are being hunted in the swamp and Bond has to kill the guard bringing up the rear. The tensionin that chapter is through the roof.
