And kool, if you though Craig's Bond wasn't out for revenge, you have seriously...SERIOUSLY mis-read Craig's take on Bond. Of course, he was out for revenge. He was taken off the assignment, (so much for duty) but kept going. The only lesson he learned was not being carried away by his desire for revenge to pull the trigger on Cabira, making him less of a loose cannon, and earning M's trust. Craig's Bond is a different guy around 'M' always...acting disciplined, but with his own agenda in his mind.

The thing he admires about 'M' is she's smarter than him, and can read him like a book, not falling for his "duty" line. And she's not stiff enough not to change her mind about policy regarding him and and her decisions. There's a mutual trust, based on mis-trust, which is fascinating, and very reminiscent of the book Bond and book "M." Fleming's Bond loved "the Old Man," but knew he'd be a cold-hearted bastard anytime it was necessary...but never do so without some very good, well-considered reasons.

You know, folks, we can be as slap-dash and surface-oriented in our discussions as we want to be. But, let's not be so focussed on the veneer, we don't do so without some background to back up our opinions...

Alright, back to your sand-box, kids.

"Dalton was the best portrayal of Bond, but I'm looking at Craig's as a close challenger. Connery was the first, and all must bow before him (Lazenby and Brosnan certainly did), but his Bond was effete snob who could also snap your knee-caps. That's not Bond. (the effete snob thing, I mean).

Bond of Fleming's novels was a diligent, meticulous planner, a bit set in his ways, but hardly a snob. Dalton's Bond was pre-occupied with his job with the non-fatal flaw (so far...) of being distracted by pretty faces, and bodies. He found women fascinating, but ultimately irritating in their capacity to make him less focussed. This is something Dalton portrayed extremely well. He'd be irritated with Kara in TLD, but make a pass at her anyway, given the chance. And he wasn't above lying to her face to get information. Dalton's Bond is Fleming's Bond: a cad, who liked his lifestyle, but hated his job.

He also did something that I just thought was smashing that no one who's ever portrayed Bond has done before and since, showing just how much he knew his Bond. Fleming used one line over and over in the series to convey Bond at his darkest: "His eyes became fierce slits." Only Dalton did that--Glen even put it in tight close-up in TLD when Dalton says: "Yes. I got the message."

I just watch TLD today, I think Dalton's a little unsung; maybe it's just cos he only got to do 2 films. Oh well, after the wreckage of AVTAK, it was good that someone else could step in with a different approach and keep it going and ensure the series' future... :) Do you find this valuable?

It might not have gone anywhere... and that woulda sucked. Imagine remembering AVTAK as the last Bond movie it would be kinda unsatisfying lol... Hands together for Timmy D. for making sure Bond is still alive and well to this day. :)

In fact, hands together for all SIX actors to play Bond for giving us an amazing franchise. Without their contributions the series may have ended years ago. Live on Bond. :) Do you find this valuable?

I agree, all six had a lot to contribute.
But to the original message on this thread, it's not really Dalton's fault Felix and his wife were fed to the sharks and Bond went on a rampage. While he personalized Bond's mannerisms, some dialogue perhaps, etc., wouldn't it be the writers that plunged Bond into darkness, not Dalton?

exactly, most of the time, its not the actor/actress,music,movie, but the scriptwriters who don't give u much 2 work with, in the 1st place. so, mebbe we've been blaming the wrong source all this time? Tha ERN

Well I think a bit too much stock is attributed to the main actors in movies; especially in a series like 007 when several actors play the same character. I would compare it to a President or Prime minister (no particular one) in that everything, whether good or bad, is automatically attributed to him when there are so many people who make decisions and other various factors involved.
