ACTORS WHO AUDITIONED FOR BOND BUT FAILED TO GET THE PART
Jan 4 2009, 8:50 AM EST
I am interested in actors the producers considered for the Bond role for each of the films or indeed between them and why they rejected them not just their names or other interesting trivia. I know Ian Fleming liked Sean Connery for the role and wrote later Bond novels with a lot of Scottish background to the character to make him fit better. Here is a taster. I know - because I spoke to him personally about it that Patrick Mower from the UK series Emmerdale was intereviewed SIX TIMES for the role of Bond by the producers but did'nt get in. Do you know any more? 00james Do you find this valuable? |

Fleming preferred David Niven for the job, the studios wanted Cary Grant early on, and after Connery they wanted Burt Reynolds (!!).There's some stunning ones early on... Maurice Roëves - a competant Scottish actor was considered as a replacement for Connery. Michael Billington - who turned up at the start of The Spy Who Loved Me, screentested prior to Live and Let Die. Do you find this valuable? |

"Fleming preferred David Niven for the job, the studios wanted Cary Grant early on, and after Connery they wanted Burt Reynolds (!!).The producers talked to James Mason for Dr. No. Cary Grant was Cubby Broccoli's best man at his marriage to Dana, so that's who he wanted (Grant wouldn't commit to more than one) Guy Hamilton wanted Burt Reynolds (this was pre-"Deliverance"), but the producers balked. Broccoli at one time talked to Adam West, and John Gavin was going to star in "Diamonds Are Forever" until Connery was enticed back. gavin was bought off. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

As moore4ever said, James Brolin was a possibility. Moore was only contracted to do five films, and after FYEO, he wanted to retire. Because of this the produceres started looking for new actors, Timothy Dalton and James Brolin. Brolin made three screen tests, but once Never Say Never Again was announced, they offered Moore loads more money and were able to contract him again. They felt with Moore they could provide good competiton with Connery's return. Brolin's three screen tests appear as a special feature in the Octopussy ultimate edition dvd.
