This one bugs me every time I see it...
Oct 27 2008, 12:43 AM EDT
During a tense moment underground just before Renard steals the nuclear warhead, Dr. Christmas Jones makes the salient observation that James Bond can't possibly be the man he pretends to be, Dr. Mikhail Arkov, because "Dr. Arkov is 63 years old."Keep in mind this is the same James Bond who shot Professor Dent, killed off the three blind mice, and boiled Dr. No to death in his nuclear reactor. What's her beef? The man she sees in front of her is too *old* to be 63? Yes, at 45, Pierce Brosnan looks quite good. But obviously, the "real" James Bond would have to be much older than Mr. Brosnan, otherwise he'd have been nine years old when he poked Miss Taro and sent her off to jail. 1 out of 4 found this valuable. I dont think years count in Bond movies, or dates etc. I mean what happened in Dr No could have happened the month before what happened in The world is Not enough. I think youre meant to look back on Dr No as if it was current time.

True, Bond exists outside of time. And the seeming inconsistencies in Bond's age are nothing compared to the mercurial fluctuations in the apparent age of Felix Leiter. To be honest, this particular question never once occurred to me, because whenever I'm watching the scene MKFreeberg mentions, I'm always stuck trying to get my head around the concept of Denise Richards as a nuclear physicist. Does... Not.... Compute. 0 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

It cant be because the Cold war is over, so it has to be after goldeneye, thus after 1991. Get it?

I always view the bond films as having a fluid timeline. Three or four movies could exist with one year of bonds life. The difference in appearance of age i simply put down to the actor used.

I know how you feel. Let's say we make the birth year of Bond the same as Connery's. That would make Bond almost 80. If you base it on the books then he's closer to ninety. Isn't it amazing that for 46 years Bond hasn't aged at all?

The character in the books does much so the character in movies doesn't either. This is part of the reason the actors that plaly paly Bond change every few (four or five movies) in general. M: He's getting reder and reder M: 007! Q: (after he haspressed the escape button and the image cutsoff) It must an early form of the Milinum bug. Was M really suprised by the fact that Bond was having som fun with Doctor Christmas Johnson? It meant to funny which it was. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

This is part of the reason the actors that plaly paly Bond change every few (four or five movies) in general.Talk about stupid. In "You Only Live Twice" Bond (Connery) and Blofeld (Donald Pleasence) actually come face-to-face for the first time so for the future they would know each on site. But in the next Bond movie "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" Bond (George Lazenbey) comes face-to-face with Blofeld again (Telly Sevalas), and yet they don't recognise one another. I think this is the biggest blunder of all time for a Bond inconsistency. Do you find this valuable? |

Oh please, do you expect them to remember everything? Otherwise they wouldn't be doing bond know, if they were as realistic as you wanted them to be, bond would be retired! The movie was great.

Plus Blofeld got face surgury(I think) and he also might have already known it was Bond just pretending not to know him Do you find this valuable? |

I agree re Bond & Blofeld NOT recognising each other in OHMSS (1969) AFTER they First meet in YOLT (1967)....was a HOWLING Great Bond Continuity error...they could so easily have avoided...For Had Telly Savalas played maybe say: "Emilio Blofeld"....a cousin to Ernst...it might have held up better - Telly was a GREEK/ AMERICAN where as Don Pleasance character was clearly a European ! The timelines in Bond are fictious....WHAT is Judi dench "School headteacher" M doing with Daniel Craig's Bond in a "Bond Re-boot"......when BOTH Goldeneye & TWINE show She is clearly AFTER Bernard Lee's M's time...? Bond is a Timeless figure...just like Simon Templar ("The Saint"), and other Film & TV heros. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Blofeld did have plastic surgery (as Bond mentions) but it was only his ear-lobes. And I've always justified that Blofeld didn't recognize Bond in glasses, just as no one recognizes Clark Kent as Superman. But that's me. Given his WWII service, Bond would have to be at least in his 90's, so one shouldn't be too concerned with strict timeline continuity. Just enjoy the movies. Do you find this valuable? |
