Was Bond simply an idealized version of Fleming's self-image?
Oct 11 2008, 12:35 PM EDT I knew there were parallels between the character and the author, but not to this extent. From Honey Top to the fear of commitment there are too many coincidences to be ignored. Quite a man. Have any of you been to the museum? 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Oct 11 2008, 2:09 PM EDT I've always wondered about that OSS come CIA story. Would love to see if any old CIA agents have written memoirs that mention it. Has this ever been really substantiated? Do you find this valuable? |

Oct 12 2008, 12:57 AM EDT I'd like to find some old CIA document about that myself! It is true that British Intelligence/SOE worked closely with the OSS and Wild Bill Donovan and Stephenson during the war...no doubt they had a hand in setting up the CIA...and Fleming was prob'ly in the mix working with Naval Intel and Adml Godfrey. Oh for a lost diary!!!!! Do you find this valuable? |

Oct 13 2008, 4:30 AM EDT "A good read? Juicy or dry? Shaken or stirred..?"Its a good read. Intersesting, poignant and gives you a sense of understanding the authors views via Bond a bit better. And the contrasts between him and Bond also. For example, Ian used to have a monthly meeting with friends who had to come up with an exotic dish they discovered somewhere and had the perfect wine or whatever to accompany it yet, he himself was a very simple eater and when in Goldeneye he always had the same meals...the simplest form of a traditional Jamaican dish. Quite unedible some commented. On one hand he used his little food clubs dishes when writing about Bond and the meals and wines he ordered yet he probably wouldnt have or couldnt have made the same choices himself. The part about the formation of the cia is in it too plus the whole explanation of how Never say Never again came about and lot lots more. Yes he was a womaniser too but he was single at that time. It also mentions a girlfriend who was killed by a bomb during ww2 in London but the background story to it is fascinating and as ive said poignant. Its a great read but i read it so long ago im sure ive forgotten most of it. Must find it again. Do you find this valuable? |
