"I'm glad he played in OHMSS because I don't think that Connery had enough charisma to have a wife and lose her right after the wedding. I think lazbenzy would of been good in FYEO."well, anon, thats something that we will never no. so u can't say that Connery would've been effective in a scene losing Tracy 2 Blofeld. as 4 tha LAZ, likewise, we'll never no, because he was his own worst enemy in not continuing the 007 role. It's hard to judge Lazenby fairly....remember he was a MALE MODEL rather than a properly trained actor back then, plus he WAS REQUIRED to portray the "Cinema Bond" - Connery's - as at that time that WAS the character on the Big screen....hence he had to copy it ! (Roger Moore later changed the role...as likewise all later Bond actors) Stepping into Sean Connery's shoes was a hell of a challenge...for ANY actor let alone a Model - in retrospect Lazenby's shortcomings are clear but then Connery in "Dr.No" is nowhere near as "polished" & confident as he is by "Goldfinger" ...the same will apply to Craig too...the more you do a role the more you make it your own... So Lazenby was vocally dubbed by george Baker as Sir Hilary Bray something some now make SO MUCH OF...big deal ! - it's a normal cinema thing ! Diana Coupland sang "Underneath the Mango Tree" for Ursula Andress... While Connery was clearly having trouble with his new teeth in "Never Say Never Again" and his Scottish accent slipped through a few times - it didn't upset me ! Lazenby WOULD have improved had he continued indeed if he'd accepted the SEVEN picture contract Cubby & Harry apparently offered him ..then probably Moore may never have played Bond (Fans can argue that one ! ) In 1969 Most seemed to ACCEPT Lazenby as "The NEW James Bond"...his abrupt exit...on the Johnny Carson show (To Cubby & Harry's SHOCK and FURY) duly started a "He wasn't really that good" Backlash....that was jumped on thereafter... For a perhaps "wooden" in the Long dialogue scenes Lazenby compensated by being very athletic and he did the tragic closing scene very well The public, well some, NEVER Forgave Lazenby for letting them down by walking Just as he'd arrived 1 out of 1 found this valuable. There are a few other valid points here tho'.....George Lazenby himself once said He felt the Bond series was THEN in 1969 on the decline.... Today we might raise Amazed eyebrows at that....BUT back in 1969 there WAS some Actual credibility in that line of thinking ! That was the year the Sixties "Died"....The Beatles & many other sixties bands split....Brian Jones left The Stones...and died. The Vietnam war dragged on and on...seemingly endlessly the appalling Charles Manson murders...then Altamont... blew away the Sixties Hippie dream.... while "Easy Rider" was a VERY Big film that year...plus "Hair" in the Rock theatre... In sharp contrast a short haired very conservative figure of Bond was NOT as Fashionable as he had been earlier... while other LONG running Sixties TV institutions like The Saint (Roger Moore) & The Avengers also ended their Production in 1969... Indeed by 1971 Roger Moore would be happily "Hamming it up" in "The Persuaders !" So...maybe Lazenby feeling the Bond series days were numbered...and to survive they later changed the style notably...can in retrospect be understood more ? As said above it is now just history....yet imporatntly Lazenby DID prove that for Bond there was "Life after Connery"....the role COULD be re-interpreted...even if along the same Basic guidelines then... .....which prior to OHMSS nobody knew and some in fact doubted.... Plus Lazenby DID add another angle to the part...somehow I just can never imagine Connery in OHMSS at all...! George Lazenby did manage to make it very much "His film"....Credit to him for that... 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"There are a few other valid points here tho'.....concur, but what does events that happened in the 60's have 2 do with walking away from the most coveted role in cinema history? i'm really trying 2 make sense of all this 'Lazenby' thing. i 4 1, am not taking nothing away from him. as i posted in an earlier post, he did a credible job taking over from the very man every actor has had 2 live up 2. i think its time that u put a lid on this Lazenby posts. "He wouldn’t have been allowed to do another one. He had an Austrailian accent and not a day of acting class in his life. Just a temporary replacement until Sean came back. "australian accent came from doin chocalate adverts, to BOND. something as big as that with no experience, and what a great job he did , 100% respect for mr lazenby. Do you find this valuable? |

There was VERY LITTLE chance Sean Connery would come backHis one off return for Diamonds Are Forever involved a staggering deal - done out of sheer desperation by Cubby & Harry - American Actor John Gavin (Best remembered as Janet Leigh's boyfriend in Hitch cock's "Psycho") stood in as Bond initially for DAF until Connery was persuaded to return Gavin was paid off by Cubby & Harry IN FULL and thanked ! So it was most unlikely Connery would come back after his exit in 1967 Lazenby WAS offered a Seven picture contract by Cubby & Harry hardly a "Temporary Replacement" ! and I clearly recall the Public reaction to Lazenby WAS positive "Bond is Dead Long Live Bond" UNTIL he suddenly QUIT the role on the Johnny carson show Carson thought he was JOKING at first then was staggered Lazenby had "Aussie friends" who built up his Ego telling him he was "Better than Connery" etc and to push for more cash unwisely he believed them ! He needed to do at least THREE Bond films really "Establish" himself as Bond then demand the bigger cash ! his Australian accent was no problem nor was Connery's Scottish one ! Connery noticeably looked a bit older when he returned in DAF....he was pitched in at the last minute, hence looked somewhat tubbier than he had in "You Only Live Twice" in 1967. Remember too Lazenby saw the very conservative short haired Bond figure a fifties creation made famous in the sixties as getting old hat by 1969 to an extent AT THE TIME that may have seemed a possibility the last Connery Bond had got mixed reviews and "Bondmania" had cooled somewhat compared to earlier in the sixties. TV shows like "Man From U.N.C.L.E.", "I Spy", "Mission:Impossible" were either cancelled or less popular by then too. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

If George was in 3 or 4 more films I think we would have given him a lot more credit. He had enough charisma to do about any bond film. His only weakness is his fighting skills. I think any other bond would have whooped his butt with the exception of Moore.
