RE: on her majestys secret service
Mar 12 2008, 8:26 PM EDT Interesting question. I'm not sure. Given the fact that Bond falls deeply in love, lets his guard down, and is subsequently devastated by his wife's murder, I wonder if the steely, unflappable Connery could have pulled it off. I also wonder if Connery would have been able to impersonate the effete Sir Hillary Bray with any degree of credibility. Do you find this valuable? |

Mar 13 2008, 10:56 AM EDT I'm inclined to agree with Matt. OHMSS required a different range - one that Connery hadn't demonstrated to date. It's one of the things I truly like about the film. I think Lazenby pulled it off and would have loved to have seen him in another film. He had potential to be a great Bond. "This never happened to the other fellow" Do you find this valuable? |

Granted Sean had'nt shown that YET but it would have been within his range. I wish Laz would have stayed then we would have been spared Moore. Do you find this valuable? |

RE: on her majestys secret service
Mar 14 2008, 6:17 PM EDT Plus, not casting Lazenby for Diamonds Are Forever was a missed opportunity for both the actor and the series. George spends OHMSS getting softened up by Tracy, but never gets to dig into the payoff that's set up by his last powerful scene -- which is that we're about to see a very pissed-off Bond getting his revenge. Imagine if Lazenby had been the one to brutally interrogate Blofeld's cohorts, and then cold-bloodedly toss Blofeld (or so he thinks) into the molten pit at the beginning of Diamonds Are Forever. Not only would Lazenby's presence put these scenes clearly in context -- that this is now a VERY personal matter for Bond -- it would also have given Lazenby the chance to take the character through the whole cycle and emerge on the other side as the Bond we know (cold, detached, professional). Do you find this valuable? |

Mar 15 2008, 2:27 AM EDT That would've been VERY cool if Laz stayed on....I think the series suffered by not doing that ,instead we got a comedic Bond and silly movies....it would have stayed with the Fleming vibe has Laz continued, and he'd have grown into 007 very well. He has played tender ("The Russia house" for instance), and had Danjaq met his monetary demands, even IF Diana Rigg were replaced with (as rumored) Julie Christie or Brigitte Bardot, OHMSS would be considered if not the best Bond, then certainly the second best. As it is, this very great Bond film is only looked at in diminished capacity because of Lazenby's presence. Had Lazenby stayed...his Bond would have been angry, yes. But we saw his angry Bond in the "this service owes her a debt" scene with "M," which he played very well. But it would take more than putting his jaw on edge to sustain the performance over a two hour movie. But the fact of thye matter is OHMSS under-performed to UA's satisfaction, and Lazenby quit of his own accord. It was this that forced the producers into approaching Connery (after considering John Gavin (?!!) for the role) and making DAF more like a "Goldfinger" in terms of outrageous entertainment. They were protecting their investment and their property, which indicated a declining market if something wasn't done to improve the series' receipts. And the reality was Lazenby didn't cut it. Connery...would at least have brought in more people, and maybe...just maybe...they wouldn't have needed to turn the series in so comedic a direction. But it's all speculation. The reality is what we've got. Do you find this valuable? |
