Page Formats!!!
Jan 23 2008, 6:51 PM EST
I've seen two different page formats: bullet points and, well, regular. Personally, I think bullet points looks a lot nicer and much more proffessonial looking. Also, I think it was JustinAtheropinion who brought up the matter of quotes. Should we italicize them??? 0 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

we should either italicize them without quotes, or quote them without italics. there's no need for both. and the speaker of the quote should be in unformatted text (or possibly bolded). i'd go with bold speaker and quotes (no italics), but that's just an aesthetic preference. italics can look pretty strange on some resolutions

Well, let's go with bullet points and and italicized quotes (without quote marks). As we go along updating we can bring everything into a consistent line using that as a standard.Just so we're "on the same page," (format-wise) Sorry. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Oh. And reverse what I said about the quotes. I mis-read. For the quotes, the best thing is nothing. That they're under the "Quotes" section is enough. Then bold the speaker of the quote to differentiate it. I think folks will figure it out.

seeing a lot of the Main pages with names both left-indented and centered. What's it to be? I prefer centerred myself--looks less crowded. JA 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

i agree, but it's tricky. when you and a few others edit pages, all of the formatting gets overwritten (even if you're just adding some text down at the bottom) and some of the names are being left-aligned. this also happens when people create new tables instead of adding on to the existing tables. i'm trying to figure out a way to work around this, and think that i might be able to do it by embedding tables. the same thing used to happen when people would make changes to the film pages (with the little header at the top). since i've changed the headers to embedded tables, it seems to have fixed the problem. i can fix the alignment problem by logging in, clicking easy edit, making an edit, deleting the edit, and then saving the page. so it deosn't really make any sense to me. i think that some people are working on lower res display settings and don't realize that the formatting is being changed (i'm sure without their knowledge). your tech guys aware of this alex? case in point... bond girls page. i'm sure that no one changed tracy's pic, but it's centered with left aligned text while most of the others are left aligned pics with left aligned text or left aligned pics with center aligned texts. it's really quite strange. You think that's wierd? I went to the Bond Girls page today, and Anya Amasova's pic was in Aki's place, and Aki's was in Lupe Lamora's! And she'd disappeared (actually she'd been pushed off-screen to the right!). I went to the History page to see who'd do something like that, and the previous pages were fine. I went back, refershed the page, and boink! everybody was back in their proper seats. Maybe Lupe was out powdering her nose. Actually that might be a bad joke considering Sanchez's trade... Yeah, the formatting is a bit tricky. The problem is that different browsers render HTML text different. Firefox might use a <strong> tag while Internet Explorer using . Our grammar filter has to parse all these entries, store them as a single value, and then return them. Sometimes a stray <p> tag (or a <BR> depending on the browser) gets through and mucks with things. We hope to improve this in the next few months, but have some exciting things coming first. Incidentally, what do you two think of the new Friends feature?

the friend feature is nice, especially for the fact that you can keep track of which changes were made to the site better than in the right side toolbar on the home page. to me, that's the most useful feature of the friends application. on another note... justin and i discussed the usefulness of having a link checker for the youtube videos, i.e. some kind of application that would check whether or not the youtube videos on the site were still linked to an active video. programs like dreamweaver have this kind of feature for checking to make sure that links are linking to existing pages. we both spend a lot of time replacing videos that have expired, and it would be sweet if this process was automated, perhaps producing a weekly report that lists bad vids or something.
