You forgot that the big enemy in LTD is a renegade Russian general whose drug/weapons smuggling scheme is situated in Afghanistan during the local war (1979-1989) between the Soviets and the Mujahidins. The Cold war wasn't really over at the time of LTK's filming (1988) : the Soviet Union broke up in 1991.
The big enemy was never the Soviet Union in Bond movies (except some opening sequences like TSWLM / AVTAK), general Gogol was more of a Soviet counterpart of M and sometimes ally, than a real enemy. The Bond movies were diplomatically soft towards the Soviet Union (thank God it never became like Rambo) and renegade Soviet generals get punished or executed.
The Cold War was only the background, and Goldeneye brilliantly exploited the end of it.

Sanchez was a cool villain, more down-to-earth and less hungry for world domination. Not your traditionnal Bond villain from the 60's/70's but still effective.
The lack of on-screen sex doesn't bother me in Dalton's movies, I think they're fine this way. What do you think he did on that boat at the beginning of TLD with the girl who wanted "a real man"? with Pam Bouvier after the speedboat ran out of gas in LTK? The cameras were chaste, Dalton's Bond wasn't.

Licence to Kill was the victim of the success of the late 80's/early 90's American heroes. 1989 was the year of Lethal Weapon 2, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Batman. That's why LTK failed at the US box office. The PG13 rating and the marketing problems also caused the failure of the movie on the US market. Those were the real circumstances.

"It sure is hard to be succesor of Moore but Dalton did what he could and gets the credits for that from me.
Dalton wasn't bad actor. In fact he's the 3rd best Bond after Moore and Connery on my opinion."

As much as I enjoy Roger 007, after 7 of his comedic-approach films, Timothy Dalton made a refreshing change and brought that grittiness and realism back to the part, which I appreciate. TLD and LTK were the first Bond films I saw and thought they were great - they encouraged me to watch the rest of the movies. Good move by Dalton for playing a completely different type of Bond than Roger, as Roger did after Sean, as Pierce did after Dalton and as Craig is now doin after Pierce. If they all did it the same it wouldn't be as interesting. But they were all good and Timothy was a pretty good Bond in my mind - my 3rd favorite, only behind Connery and Craig. :)

I disagree. The Living Daylights is one of my favorite Bond films, especially because of Dalton's portrayal. Licence to Kill a bit less so, although they did incorporate a lot of Fleming into it (not only from "Live and let Die" but also from "The Man with the Golden Gun.")

"The two stories during the Dalton era were two of the most *personal* Bond stories -- they were far less about the evil plot he was up against and more about Bond's personal loyalties (to Pushkin, to the murdered British agents, to Felix) and the loyalties of others (notably, Felix and Q), not to mention personal betrayal (Koskov) -- LTK alone is an almost unending series of betrayals and retributions amongst Bond, Sanchez, the CIA, and Sanchez's organization.

Incidentally, Bond's not fighting the war on drugs in these two films -- he's fighting the men themselves, although drugs happen to be the way they finance their operations (as was also the case with Kananga and Kristatos). In both cases, the fact that he upsets a drug empire is incidental -- what he's after is revenge for the killing of 00 agents (TLD) and the personal attack on Felix and Della (LTK).

It's interesting that of the first 16 Bond films, the 3 most personal ones were Lazenby's and Dalton's. The Bonds of Connery and Moore, for all their differences, were both larger than life and emotionally unapproachable. It took Lazenby to give us a vulnerable Bond, and Dalton to give us a wrathful Bond.

Although Tim wasn't my favorite, he did tighten the focus on the character and gave the series a much-needed break from stainless-steel megasets, world-domination schemes, and endless hordes of gun-toting henchmen. It was a transitional period for both Bond and the world in general, and if nothing else, the series got smarter and grittier during Dalton's tenure.u"
