SPECTRE

SPECTRE - James Bond
In the James Bond films, SPECTRE (Special Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion) is an international terrorism organization that aims to control the world, or at least to make a boat load of money while trying. SPECTRE is headed by Ernst Stravo Blofeld, a criminal mastermind who insists upon unconditional loyalty and success, where the price for failure is certainly death, generally via some organizationally-public means. SPECTRE retains its members loyalty in much the same way that they conduct their business in the world: through terrorism.

The general tactic behind SPECTRE operations is to facilitate war between the East (Soviet Bloc) and the West (NATO) and when one side wins, SPECTRE will step in and destroy the weakened superpower that's left standing. SPECTRE has pursued this goal in a number of ways, from assassinating British spies (From Russia with Love), to stealing nuclear bombs (Thunderball) to hijacking American and Russian spacecraft (You Only Live Twice). Other schemes include classic Blofeld plots of gaining himself a title (Count de Bleauchamp) and a pardon (On Her Majesty's Secret Service) and holding the world for ransom using a diamond satelite superweapon orbiting in outer space (Diamonds Are Forever).

SPECTRE is organized in a strict hierarchy, with No. 1 as supreme leader and subsequent agents holding progressively diminished responsibilities. No. 1 answers to no one, No. 2 only answers to No1. No 3 answers to both Nos. 1 and 2, and so on. In the event that one of the agents is killed (either by outside operatives or by internal cleansings), the subsequent agents get promoted, never breaking the hierarchy.

In the films, SPECTRE never appears after For Your Eyes Only, when Bond drops Blofeld into a smokestack, apparently killing him, in the opening scene.

Films that involve SPECTRE:

Differences between the films and novels:
  • SPECTRE plays a much more important role in the films as opposed to the novels. Thunderball is the novel in which we see the most involvement by SPECTRE, but Bond and Felix foil SPECTRE's plot and the group is disbanded. SPECTRE attempts to reform in On Her Majesty's Secret Service, but is unsuccessful. Finally, with the death of Blofeld in You Only Live Twice, we never see SPECTRE again in the novels. With the exception of Goldfinger, the first decade of Bond films were motivated by SPECTRE plots.
  • As opposed to SPECTRE, the main force of evil that Bond fights against in the novels is SMERSH (Smert Shiponum - 'Death to spies' in Russian), a division of the Russian military tasked primarily with investigating deserters, spies, and insurgents (and taking action against these groups). In the films, SPECTRE could have been swapped for SMERSH to help downplay the Soviet comparisons and help to dissuade negative attitudes about the Soviet Union during a time when East/West relations were tense.
  • SPECTRE appears to be a much more developed and extensive network in the films as opposed to the novels. When Bond foils SPECTRE's plans in Thunderball (novel), SPECTRE never recover. In the films, Bond destroys SPECTRE's plots repeatedly, and they come back, sometimes stronger, in subsequent films until Blofeld's death in the introductory scene in For Your Eyes Only.
  • In the novels, SMERSH's numbering system is based on a rotating model, where numbers are randomly assigned every given time period so as to avoid intelligence services being able to associate the numbers with any fixed identity. In the films, the SPECTRE numbering system is static and based on a strict hierarchy.
