Who he is:

  • Grant is a homicidal paranoiac who is believed by SPECTRE training Chief Morzeny to be the best and most ruthless assassin at the organization's disposal.
  • He kills off several of James Bond's allies including Ali Kerim Bey and contact Nash.
  • Grant takes Nash's identity to get closer to bond and Tatiana on the Orient Express train.
  • His favorite weapon is a garrote wire that can strangle someone silently in short time, it is concealed in his wristwatch. He also very efficent with his bare hands and handguns.

Evil scheme:

  • Stalking Bond while in Istanbul, Grant must first protect Bond to allow the success of the mission, including actually saving Bond's life at the gypsy camp and eliminating another enemy spy at the Hagia Sophia basilica.
  • Retrieving the Lektor for his boss, ColonelRosa Klebb, by making sure that Bond gets it from the Russians before taking it from him by force, then killing Bond.

Attempted methods of killing Bond:

  • Strangling him with a garrote wire hidden in his wristwatch.
  • Brawling with Bond inside a cabin within the Orient Express.

How plans were foiled:

  • 007 tricks him into opening the Q branch briefcase which releases tear gas. This causes a fight between Bond and Grant and leads to his death.

How he is dispatched:

  • Bond throttles Grant with his own garrote.

Defining dialogue:

  • "The first bullet won't kill you. Not the second, not even the third. Not until you crawl over here and kiss my foot!"
  • "You may know the right wines but you're the one on your knees."


  • Is never actually referred to as "Red" in the movie or the video game, he is just called "Grant" several times.
  • Robert Shaw appeared with Sean Connery a second time in 1975`s Robin and Marion.
  • In the novel he is called "Donavon Grant".
