Quantum of Solace another step away from Bond as we know him?

Source: CinemaBlend

The next time you see James Bond, he’ll be doing his level best to stop being James Bond. According to The Independent, the producers have stripped the character of his trademark catchphrases in Quantum of Solace.

In particular, they’ve made sure to keep him from asking for a martini shaken, not stirred. This is 2008. Presumably he now drinks Trump Vodka and Redbull. If you ask him his name, he’ll just say James Bond. Nowhere in the film will he respond with his trademark “Bond, James Bond.” Some of his signature lines were written into the script and even filmed, but director Marc Forester says, “it never worked as we hoped. I just felt we should cut it out, and Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson [the film's producers] agreed, and Daniel [Craig, who plays Bond] agreed, too. It's nice to be open-minded about the Bond formula. You can always go back to them later on.”

This really isn’t a surprise. They’ve had the franchise headed in this direction ever since Casino Royale was first announced. They want James Bond to be Jason Bourne, and that means shucking all the Bond trappings. Since Casino Royale was a big hit, that has made it easier for them to go even further with the de-Bondification of 007. It’s all part of bringing Bond into the 21st century… and making him boring.

Sorry, I know a lot of you out there love the new direction this franchise is headed. But when I go to see a James Bond movie I want to see, well, a James Bond movie. What the franchise is tired? Well then stop making Bond movies, and try calling whatever it is you are making something else. I want to see a guy in a tux drinking martinis and getting cool gadgets from an old fart named Q. If I want to see Jason Bourne, well I’ve got his address. I think he lives next door to Damon, Matt Damon.

My question here is if they want to bring Bond into the 21st century and get him away from those lines and gestures then why did they have him drink a martini (even if it wasnt a vodka martini shaken and not stirred) and also they last line of the entire movie was "The names Bond, James Bond." If they were getting rid of those lines they wouldnt have made that the most memorable. I think that things like this are being blown out of porportion. They probably would like to bring the character up to the times ethically and morally. Lets face it if Craig played Bond as a Connery there would be an uproar in the femal Bond fans because Bond could no longer womanize as much as the 60's. I don't think they will take the class away from Bond. Bond is classy and that is the major part of who he is.

As the writer points out I want my Bond movies to be Bond movies. I hate the turn Dalton took in the late 80s (less womanizing) and did not prefer Brosnan's reflective moments on the beach. That said, the series needed something fresh. I think Craig brings that but I reject the notion that we need to make Bond Jason Bourne. And I loved the Bourne series - but it's a different series. I don't mind the occasional line change, but if I start seeing him drinking daiquiris (or worse driving a Ford again) I'm going to be very upset.

I think that the Producers r just playing it 4 the times, and not necessarily Jason B. Shakin' things up a bit isn't going 2 hurt that much. I just hope that the films title score is a very good 1. Luv, Ern.

JASON BOURNE! What the hell is this, a mental institute. These produces are ruining the series. The great phrase "Bond, James Bond" gone. The Martini gone is a big part, like Q & Moneypenny, but no more, "Bond, James Bond"? The series might as well end if they start all this crap. The line Blofeld said in DAF,"nice to see you haven't lost that fine mental edge 007, please don't get any foolish notions. That missle is not a practical weapon." Bond may have not lost the mental edge, but the producers sure did. Stupid Producers.
