Hubert Bonisseur de La Bath, agent OSS 117 is the creation of french writer Jean Bruce. De La Bath is an american of French descent, he first worked for the Office of Strategic Services and later for the C.I.A. Bruce wrote 91 novels starring OSS 117, the first in 1949, before his death in a car crash in 1963. Bruce's widow, Josette Bruce continued with 143 novels from 1966 until her death, and after that her two children followed with 24 novels.
The first film with this character,
OSS 117 Is Not Dead, was made in 1956, starring Ivan Desny, but Andre Hunebelle (creator of the Fantomas series, another Eurospy piece) turned the character into a typical Eurospy Bond spoof. In 2006 Michel Hazanavicius made
OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies, spoofing Connery's Bond and the spy films in general.
