Michael Sheen not Blofeld? This is a featured page

Waaay back in JMichael Sheenune a rumour was started that “Underworld” and “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” star Michael Sheen would be waxing his head to play the villainous Ernst Stavro Blofeld in the as yet untitled James Bond 23.

The rumour, which seems to have originated from The Guardian online and the Daily Express, was reported here on FilmShaft and served up with a bucket load of salt to take it with. According to the newspapers an “unnamed source” told the Express that Sheen was in talks for the role:

“Michael is hot property right now and it is felt that he’s the right man to bring Blofeld back to life,” an unnamed source told the Daily Express newspaper. “Michael was a Bond fan in his youth, so this would be a dream role for him.”

However Sheen, who will feature in the ranks of The Volturi this November in New Moon, has told reporters that the rumours are untrue:

“The rumours are I might be playing Blofeld, the Bond villain, because Peter Morgan, who I’ve done Frost/Nixon, The Queen and The Damned United with, is writing it – there is no truth to those rumours,”…

…The Welsh actor added, with a smile: “I wish I could tell you different, but no.”

I have to say that while it sniffed of bull from the outset, the idea of Sheen playing one of cinema’s most iconic (bald) villains does have it’s appeal. The eyes, the hook nose and the class acting could all have painted a timeless onscreen picture – or to put it a little less melodramatically he’d have been bloody brilliant!

The Blofeld of the books was not bald, did not have a cat, and didn't wear Nehru suits. I think they should get an actor that could portray the menace of the literary Blofeld *(who ended up going mad from syphilis in "You Only Live Twice") not the cartoonish figure from the early films. The actor should also be older than Daniel Craig. Then again why bring Blofeld back at all? S.P.E.C.T.R.E. existed in the books beyond Fleming's writings when Blofeld's illegitimate daughter took over the organization in "For Special Services" and Tamil Rahani took over after her in "Role of Honour" and "Nobody Lives Forever". Maybe it is time to mine the many books written by John Gardner, which are filled with beautiful women, ingenious gadgets, evil villains and their henchmen, exotic locales, and other Bond mainstays.

Blofeld? Really? Didn't we dump him down a smokestack thirty years ago? And SPECTRE is so last century. I mean maybe that sounded ominous back in 1962 but today it belongs in an Austin Powers movie. But if they're going to reboot the whole franchise as if Bond 1-20 never happened then I guess we can get him married again.

Why has Bond's image been reinvented for Daniel Craig? He is no longer a womanizer( if you blinked during Quantum, you missed his one tryst). They seem more interested in showing Craig undressed than the Bond girls. And whatever happened to his sarcastic wit? This guys portrayal is too dark. And where is Moneypenny, Q, or Charles? How about a gadget or two? These are things that James Bond fans have appreciated over the past fifty years. It seems like all the groundwork Connery and Bronson created has been removed from the Bond persona. I hope the writers don't forget why we love Bond in future films. Unless the role is being written expressly for female audiences
