Background:
  • "M" is a code letter and name for the head of the British Secret Intelligence Service, also known as MI6.
  • M likely stands for Sir Miles Messervy (Book Name + Gen. Gogol calls him "Miles' in The Spy Who Loved Me)
  • The title "M" is believed to have been created by Ian Fleming from the first real-life head of Her Majesty's Secret Service, Mansfield Smith-Cumming, who used his initial "C" to indicate when he had signed a paper. Other influences on the character include Admiral John Godfrey, Fleming's superior in British Naval Intelligence during World War II. The "M" might also be an abbreviation for Minister, refering to the title of the MI6 head. In Ian Fleming's last novel, The Man with the Golden Gun, it was revealed that M's real name is Vice Admiral Sir Miles Messervy KCMG.

Appears in:

Actors:

Bernard Lee
  • the first M, Lee appeared in the first 11 films from Dr. No(1962) through Moonraker (1979)
Bernard Lee appeared with Sean Connery, George Lazenby and Roger Moore as the first M. Seems to show distrust in Connerys bond at first then becomes closer to him in other movies professionally. Shows total distrust in Lazenby's Bond and relieves him by giving him two weeks leave and taking Bond off the Blofeld case saying bond couldn't properly take Blofeld out and insists 008 to replace bond.
Bernard Lee passed away in 1981 around time of filming For your eyes only. Out of respect they put M`s character on holiday and had M`s lines transferred to Minister of Defense and Bill Tanner.
M - James Bond
Robert Brown
starred with Roger Moore and Timonthy Dalton as M
Had little humor in his films and is the only M to have James Bond`s licence to kill revoked showing no sympthy or regret in the Dalton film Licence to Kill.
It is never explicitly stated on screen whether Robert Brown's character is intended to be Sir Miles Messervy (Bernard Lee's character) or a promoted Admiral Hargreaves, the role played by Brown in The spy who loved me.
M - James Bond
Judi Dench
  • The first female to take the role, Dame Dench is the current M, first picking up the role in Goldeneye. She continues to this day, including Quantum Of Solace.
  • starred in all 4 of Pierce Brosnans Bond films and in Daniel Craigs two films.
  • As M she dislikes bond antics as clearly stated in Goldeneye and her other films. She disagrees with James Bond does or acts. Has Brosnans Bond stay in captivity in Korea in Die Another Day. With a scene showing Brosnans anger and dislike for M.
  • Although she has shown disdain towards Bond she does however show support as she wants bond to come home alive in Goldeneye. In World is not enough says Bond is best agent she ever had. In Casino Royale wants Craigs bond to come back to MI6.
M - James Bond
Edward Fox
  • He was in only one Unoffical Bond Movie: Never Say Never Again.
M In NSNA

Trivia:
  • In Fleming's novel "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", it is revealed that M's salary as head of the Secret Service was 5000 pounds a year (that was considered a lot of money in the early 60's) and an additional 1500 pounds as his naval pay (as a retired "Vice Admiral")
  • The first M's home was called "Quarterdeck," and could be seen in On Her Majesty's Secret Service
  • In Casino Royale, it is revealed that "M" is also the first letter of the current M's name. Her home is an apartment is in London, which she shares with her husband.

Bernard Lee -- the BEST!! Too bad he passed away--it was perfect casting.Robert Brown seemed a more minor role in his movies, not quite the gravity of the others.Judi Dench was very good as well--but a former Admiral (traditionaly the head of MI6),HMMMM???? But she's still a hardcase boss.
