- Commander John Strangways is the head of MI6's Section J in Jamaica.
- After discovering some radioactive material on Dr. No's island of Crab Key, Strangways and his secretary Mary are murdered by the Three Blind Mice after a game of card at the Queen's Club. Strangways disappearance is the catalyst for Bond's trip to Jamaica. Bond is tasked with figuring out what happened to Strangways and Mary Prescott.
How he helps Bond:
- He really doesn't help Bond, except that Bond uses information found in his apartment after Strangways is killed to figure out that he needs to be poking around Crab Key.
