James Bond Suits
| James Bond Style | Suits | Tuxedos | Watches | Active Wear | Sunglasses |
From the clean tailored lines of the early 60s to the flared bell-bottom's of the 70s, James was never without a nice suit. Below are some more noteworthy choices. For our purposes here, suits basically refer to any formal or semi-formal apparel that includes a coat or sport jacket.
The Connery Era: 1960s-1970s
Anthony Sinclair, a British haberdasher, was responsible for the earliest Bond suits (Dr. No through You Only Live Twice). These simply styled suits became known as the Conduit Cut and tended to be dark blue or gray, single-breasted, and two-buttoned.
With the introduction of the model-turned-actor Lazenby in On Her Majesty's Secret Service (OHMSS), Bond's suits became a bit more en vogue, due to the efforts of Dimitrio Major. During this point in the evolution of Bond's suit, we see wider lapels, three-piece styles, and a variety of colors employed by Major. Fundamentally though, the suits were all adaptations of the Conduit Cut. It's also interesting to note that pre-OHMSS, Bond is seldom garbed in anything but a suit. With Lazenby, Bond seems to dress more for the occasion, wearing different outfits depending on where he is in the world.

The Moore Era: 1970s-1980s
During the Moore years, Bond's suits were designed by Cyril Castle who intended to update Bond's look with contemporary styles, leaving the Conduit Cut behind. Also note that during this stage, Bond began wearing sport jackets with contrasting slacks. Douglas Hayward also contributed to Bond's suit styles during the Moore era. Hayward brought Bond back to his roots, shelving the 70s styles for more traditional three-piece cuts.

The Dalton Years: 1980s-1990s
The Dalton era saw a further regression to the standard dark blue "uniform" of the Connery days. This style contrasted with the pastels that have come to be associated with 80s fashion. Dalton is also seldom wearing a suit, rather preferring more active wear or a tuxedo.

The Brosnan Era: 1990s-2000s
The Brosnan era brought Bond away from the traditional English cuts and to more stylish Italian cuts. The Brosnan Bond wears $5000 custom tailored suits by Brioni, an Italian suit company. Since Brosnan, Bond's suits have differed from previous styles because they bring Bond, and his style to the forefront, as opposed to the bland and conservative suits from previous incarnations. The new Bond certainly will be the best dressed man in the room, a far cry from Connery's Bond who, as a secret agent should, blended seamlessly into the crowd.
