The main character is called "GoldenEye".He is an ex-MI6 agent who after the death of Agent 007 is recruited by Auric Goldfinger. Goldfinger is a member of a powerful unnamed criminal organization. Your character is recruited to assassinate Goldfinger's rival: Dr. Julius No. Beside Auric Goldfinger and Dr. No several other characters from the James Bond series make appearances throughout the game in a non-canonical setting including Oddjob, Pussy_Galore, Xenia Onatopp and Francisco Scaramanga.

The game features a multiplayer component as well. It features a 4-player spilt screen play, as well as on-line play on the PlayStation 2 and Xbox. On November 26, 2006 the servers for both versions were shut down due to "inactivity" on-line.
A sequel to GoldenEye: Rogue Agent was originally planned, but scrapped due to poor sales and reviews. The game's ending suggested a sequel as well. According to various sources, the sequel would have included vehicles and a longer story mode.
