The mayor of a Chilean region was briefly detained by police on Tuesday after bursting onto the set and interrupting filming of the upcoming James Bond film, Quantum of Solace. According to local media reports, Carlos Lopez drove onto the set — which was filming at the train station in the mining town of Baquedano — and nearly ran over two people.
The film shoot proceeded a few minutes following the incident and police detained Lopez briefly for disorderly conduct and trespassing before releasing him. Lopez is the mayor of the Sierra Gorda municipality in northern Chile, of which Baquedano is part. He has been protesting the film's shoot because he says producers failed to gain his permission before filming. He has also condemned the fact that producers will present the scenes as a site in Bolivia. Sierra Gorda is located in Antofagasta region, a territory that neighbouring Bolivia lost to Chile in the late 19th century. Quantum of Solace, in which Daniel Craig, reprises the role of British super spy James Bond for the 22nd film of the series, is set for international release in early November 2008.
