This miniature submersible was used by Blofeld to attempt an escape from his exploding oil drilling platform off the coast of Baja California. Blofeld's escape was thwarted by Bond who killed the crane operator and smashed Blofeld into the side of the oil rig. We assume that Blofeld perishes in the explosion, but he returns later in the opening sequence of For Your Eyes Only. This suggests that Blofeld and his submersible may have somehow survived the destruction on his oil rig.
