The 00 agents are the elite operatives of MI6, the British international intelligence agency. AtIn film, there anyis givenallusion time,that there are only nine9 European00 agents.agents however in other canon references, there are as many as 12 mentioned . New agents are assigned when a current agent is dismissed or is killed in the field. All 00 agents have a license to kill, which means that they have authorization to accomplish their goal through ANY means necessary. To be eligible for 00 status, one must kill someone in cold-blood while on mission.

We only ever see all of the 00s on screen together during the "Great 00 Meeting" in the movie Thunderball. 003 appears to be a female, but none of their faces are discernible. The agents are gathered to investigate Blofeld's threat of nuclear attack. Some use this scene as proof that there are only 9 00 agents ever active at once. However, Moneypenny states that all the 00 agent in Europe have been recalled for the meeting, not all active 00 agents.

There have been many references to other Double-0 agents in the films and novels, but none are featured prominently. The total number of 00s worldwide is unknown, but 16 agents have been referred to in both the films and novels (extending past the Fleming series). 008may008 may be the most famous because his number is mentioned multiple times as a replacement threat by M if 007 is incapable of following orders. Over the 21 films to date, 7 different 00 - numbers have been introduced.

Cinematic 00 Agents:

Below is a list of 00s that have been named or referred to in the films:

• 002: The first 002, Bill Fairbanks was assassinated by Fransisco Scaramanga in Beirut in The Man with the Golden Gun. In The Living Daylights, the second 002 (Fairbanks replacement) is killed during the infiltrated training exercises at Gibraltar.

• 003: The first 003 is only seen seated from behind at the gathering in Thunderball. Her replacement, Jason Walters, is found dead, in Siberia, in A View to a Kill.

• 004: Frederick Warder is killed along with 002 at the Gibraltar training exercise.

• 006: Traitor. In the opening sequence of Goldeneye, Alec Trevelyan (006) meets Bond in a chemical weapons facility on a mission. He is believed to be shot in the head in the following melee from which Bond escapes. Nine years later it is revealed that 006 actually defected and is the mastermind behind the theft of the Goldeneye Satellite. He falls from the antenna of a satellite dish in Cuba but dies only after the antenna falls on him following the explosive destruction of the control centre.

• 008: In the film Goldfinger, M is unhappy with the way Bond is doing things and suggests replacing him with the more conservative 008 (named Bill). Later in the movie, Bond tells Auric Goldfinger that if he fails to report, it is likely 008 will replace him to complete the mission. Goldfinger is not impressed and responds, 'I trust he will be more successful'. 008 is also almost recalled from Hong Kong to relieve 007 in The Living Daylights as he is more inclined to follow orders than Bond.

• 009: Peter Smith is killed in East Germany by Mischka and Grischka, the two knife-throwing twins. 009 makes a spectacular entrance to the British Embassy, dressed as a clown and holding a Fabergé egg inOctopussy. In the The World Is Not Enough, M assigned another 009 to kill Renard, despite shooting him in the head, Renard lives.

Literary 00 Agents:

• 001: Edward Donne is mentioned briefly in the novel Doubleshot by Raymond Benson.

• 004: Scarlett Papava is announced to be the new 004 in the Sebastian Faulks novel, Devil May Care.
  

  MI6 Headquarters

• 005:Stuart Thomas never appeared in the films but made two appearances in the books. In Colonel Sun he is Stuart Thomas, head of G section, who had served as 005 until an eye defect forced him into retirement. He ran a bookshop as a cover but it was burnt down by the opposition and 005 disappeared. M later says he is presumed dead. However in The Facts of Death a scaled down G section is being run by Stuart Thomas. Like Mark Twain said, 'reports of his death have been greatly exaggerated'.

• 006 : Previously in the book On Her Majesty's Secret Service, when Mary Goodnight became the 00 section secretary, there is a bet in the section as to who will seduce her first. The joint favourites are 007 and 006, an ex-Royal Marine Commando.

• 008: Goldfinger has a similar scenario to the film of the same name only Bond is not merely failing to report but facing certain death. The novelMoonraker however has 008 (named Bill) resting in Berlin following a mission. Bond says he must be badly injured then.

• 009: The graphic novels Deadly Double and Sepent's Tooth, feature a third agent 009.

• 0011: The 00 mentioned in the novel Moonraker who "vanished into the 'Dirty Half-Mile' in Singapore two months ago." Fate unknown.
  

• 00?: Agent York is killed in the comic strip River of Death (published June 24, 1969 to November 29, 1969 in The Daily Express). Agent York is a 00 agent but his number isn't revealed.

• 00?: Suzi Kew, a recurring character in the Daily Express comic strip series of the 1960s and 1970s, Suzi Kew is a 00 agent, but her number is not revealed.
